hello! as of v3.1.0 (unreleased as of august 9th), confy is written in rust.
suffering, mostly. jokes aside, i did this so i could more easily split confy into more than one file for maintainability, and so i could easily provide binaries for the project.
learning ratatui was surely a..“journey”, and still is!
the workload here has also been considerable, so expect a bit before the next update. i predict the next update will be anywhere from late september to mid november.
..pip? yeah, no, sorry. that’s gonna have to go. confy v3.0.0 will stay there for legacy users but it will be deprecated and won’t have the latest features, and rust simply doesn’t support it seeing as it isn’t python. once confy v3.1.0 is fully released, i will attempt to put confy on cargo as a replacement, though this will not be guaranteed.
..users with computers which can’t compile rust? people who’s computers simply don’t have the ability to compile rust hardware-wise, confy’s full v3.1.0 release will have binaries on github via github actions.
if you’re reading this before the release of v3.1.0, i apologize i haven’t been able to get the latest update of confy out sooner. as mentioned earlier, the workload brought about by rewriting in rust has been pretty big, even increasing the line count across all 8 rust files from the original python file’s 1500 to a whopping 1756 total, and that’s just for the rewrite. there’s still features to add and bugs to patch.

as of now, you can expect the full version of this release to be available to the public within 2 weeks at most. at best, something closer to within 5 days is expected. the 2 week deadline is only in case unexpected development things happen, such as a major bug that needs to be patched out, and there are already quite a few of those. as of the pre-release version, there’s:
starship.toml)..and i’m sure there’s much more than that.
headline feature: the confy community repository! sure, there isn’t much of a community to begin with, but the community repo will host community-made themes, config templates (eg, a freebsd sysadmin one that contains files like jail.conf, pf.conf, etc), and likely more as more updates come! other features i plan to implement:
git intergration: manage your dotfiles repo with ease! with a simple :git command, confy wil automatically copy your configs (including it’s own, though this can be toggled) into a preset (but configurable!) path and, get this: it’ll organize the dotfiles for you! for example, if it sees more than one file that starts with hypr, it’ll automatically make a folder named hypr and put those configs in there. groups will also become folders, too! and the configs in said groups will go into those folders in the github repo. it only does auto-sorting if you have ungrouped configs. auto-pushing and committing are disabled by default, but if enabled, it’ll run git add ., let you write the commit message, ask if you wanna edit the readme, and then push for you. you can also blacklist configs to copy, such as .env files or other personal files.
a lot more config options:
